SEXING IN OVO : A MAJOR ADVANCE FOR THE DUCK INDUSTRY

MAÏSADOUR GROUP
Sud-Ouest Accouvage* has developed, in partnership with Ovalie Innovation and CEA Tech, a robot capable of identifying the sex of ducklings through the eggshell. This is a real asset for animal welfare and the performance of the industry. The inauguration ceremony took place in Aignan (Gers) on Friday 19 September, attended by 120 guests.

The result of nearly ten years of research, the in-ovo sexing robot marks a revolution in the world of hatchery operations. Thanks to imaging technology coupled with artificial intelligence, it is now possible to automatically determine the sex of ducklings through the eggshell.

‘By observing the egg at different stages of development, we noticed that we could see the eye of the future duck through the shell between the 8th and 11th day of incubation,’ explains Céline Mazé, Director of Palmiped Breeding. This is essential information because males invariably have black eyes, while females, which have no commercial value for the industry, have light-coloured eyes.

Sud-Ouest Accouvage then worked with Ovalie Innovation and CEA Tech in Bordeaux to integrate artificial intelligence into the process.

Finally, it commissioned SMI IA, a company based in the Landes region, to build the robot incorporating all the necessary technology.

A total of 4 million euros was invested in designing this machine and expanding the Aignan site. As a result, the robot analyses 90,000 eggs per day, with a success rate of 95%. This is a major asset for animal welfare and hatchery performance.

While the interprofessional organisation is working to make in-ovo sexing mandatory in the coming years, Sud-Ouest Accouvage is taking the lead, strengthening both its local presence and its expertise in the field of hatchery services.

This project has been welcomed by local elected officials and industry stakeholders. More than 120 guests attended the inauguration ceremony on 19 September 2025 at the Aignan hatchery, including representatives from institutions, inter-professional organisations, cooperatives and partners. In-ovo sexing illustrates Maïsadour’s pioneering commitment to a responsible and sustainable industry with strong regional roots.
